I am writing this on the first day of what I think will be a multi-year project. I am turning my engineering practice over to AI agents. Not augmenting it; restructuring it.
I have ten years of platform engineering. I know how to operate CI/CD. I know how to design RBAC. I know how to keep a Kubernetes cluster honest. I am not throwing those away. I am building, on top of them, a new skill: designing AI agent workforces that integrate with the existing disciplines and accelerate the existing pipeline.
I think the next five years of engineering practice will be reshaped by this. I want to be early. I want to have something concrete to point at. I want my methodology to come from real practice, not from speculation.
So: a platform. A laboratory. Real client work pushed through the pipeline. A blog. Retrospectives. Naming the patterns as they emerge. Writing them down. Sharing them.
Day one. We’ll see.
